Citizen Science: Indoor Air Quality

Check out a Citizen Science kit at your library to monitor air quality in your home and other indoor spaces by measuring carbon dioxide levels.

High carbon dioxide (CO2) levels can indicate poor air quality and a need for better ventilation, and proper ventilation can reduce your exposure to allergens, pollutants and viruses. Now you can monitor CO2 levels in your home and other indoor spaces by checking out an Indoor Air Quality kit from Citizen Science. Kits come with a calculator-sized electronic sensor device you can place anywhere you’d like to check CO2 levels, along with instructions and information about steps to take to get more fresh air into your indoor spaces.

Just check out a kit from the Information Desk at one of the four Chandler Public Library locations, or place a hold if kits are checked out. See the instruction guide in the kit to get started, or visit the Citizen Science website for more information and an instructional video. Kits check out for 3 weeks and cannot be renewed.

You can do even more with your Indoor Air Quality kit. Citizen Science is a project that brings ordinary people together to gather information in their communities and share it with scientists and researchers. You can create an optional account and upload the CO2 readings you collect from coffee shops, indoor events and other places you visit while you have the kit checked out. You can also view the data that other people have collected about air quality in local places. (This step is optional; you can use the kit solely to measure CO2 in your own home without creating an account, installing the app or sharing data.)
