|
Members
of the Chandler Junior Woman’s Club adopted the Chandler Library project.

July
1953
|
Chandler
Town Council passed a 5-mil tax levy, which included acquisition of land and
funds to help maintain the library IF the Junior’s were successful in getting
a building built.

October
1953
|
Chandler
Junior Women launched a full-fledge drive for the $8,000 needed to build a
library.
|
|
June
1954
|
The
library building was completed.
The Maricopa Lending Library provided 1500 books and the Woman’s Club
members collected 1700 books
|
|
August
1, 1954
|
Chandler
Library is opened to the public.
(Today, this building houses the Chandler Historical Museum.)

August
2, 1954
|
Mrs.
Robert Ryan, president of the Chandler Junior Woman’s Club, presented the key
of the new city library to Mayor Paul Gaumer and the City Council.

March
1974
|
Library
undergoes a major extension of the original library building to accommodate
growth
|
|
February
1982
|
The
Friends of the Chandler Public Library was established.
|
|
January
1988
|
Library
moves into larger quarters at the Rocky Mountain building.

September 1992
|
The library introduces
the “City of Readers Educational (CORE) Programs” – the only library
based adult education program monitored through the Arizona Department of
Education.

January
1996
|
The
new Downtown Library, constructed with bond funds and a generous donation from
Intel Corporation, opens to the public.
|
|
August
1998
|
The
Hamilton Branch Library opens in south Chandler as a shared-use facility with
Hamilton High School.

|
September 1999
|
The
Friends of the Chandler Public Library launch a $1 million endowment campaign.

March
2000
|
The
Sunset Branch Library opens in west Chandler through a partnership with the
private developer of the Sunset Plaza retail center.

2001
|
Library
receives 10-year grant from Intel Corporation to meet ongoing technology needs
|
|
July
2003
|
The
Basha Branch Library opens in southeast Chandler at Basha High School, once
again through a partnership with Chandler Unified School District.
