Mission Statement  The Chandler Public Library Adult Education Programs provide comprehensive adult literacy services at no cost to individuals in the community to acquire basic English proficiency, to improve basic educational skills or earn a high school equivalency diploma. 
""Adult Education/GED Preparation Classes
For adult learners who want Basic Education or GED Test Preparation in a classroom setting

FREE of charge!

  • Classes meet twice a week for three hours.

  • Morning or evening classes available

  • Sessions are approximately 12 weeks. 

  • Class days and times may be selected after registration and placement testing.

  • Classes are open to students 16 years and older who are not currently enrolled in high school. For students age 16 –17, an official withdrawal slip is required.

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency is required for this class.

  • Class openings are limited.  Dates subject to change.

Program Introductions for next (November) session - You must attend one of the following dates if you would like to enroll in our classes.  No registration needed for Program Introductions.  Space is limited, and Program Introductions are done on a first come, first served basis.

  • Tuesday, August 19, 7 - 8:30 p.m.

  • Tuesday, September 16, 6 - 7:30 p.m. 

  • Saturday, October 4, 10 - 11:30 a.m.

  • Tuesday, October 21, 7 - 8:30 p.m.

  • Thursday, October 30, 6 - 7:30 p.m.

You will receive information on the Chandler Public Library Adult Education Services and will be able to make an appointment for testing and advisement.  An advisor will work with you to determine the services that are best suited to meet your individual goals.  Call Donna at 480-782-2809 if you have any questions about registration.

""GED Testing
  • Offered one Saturday a month at the Downtown Chandler Library
  • Done on first come, first served basis. 
  • You must be at least 16 years of age and withdrawn from school in order to take the GED test.
  • Bring two forms of ID such as a driver’s license AND a social security card or birth certificate.
  • If you are under 18 years of age, you will also need to bring a withdrawal form from your last school of attendance, AND a notarized letter from your parent or guardian giving their permission for you to take the test.  Sample letters to use: Word document or PDF format

For adults who want to prepare for the U.S. Citizenship interview and written examination

FREE of charge!

  • Participants must be 18 years or older.

  • Participants must be able to read, write, speak and understand basic English.

  • Children/guests not permitted

  • Workshop will cover U.S. history and government, review of citizenship exam and how to complete forms.

Learning Lab Schedule


Fall 2008 Hours
Monday and Wednesday 12:00 - 5:00 PM
Tuesday and Thursday 2:00 - 6:00 PM.
Sunday 2:00 - 5:00 PM.

Come during any Learning Lab hours.  No registration required.  Located on the 2nd floor of the Downtown Chandler Library.  Closed during Chandler School District intersessions and holidays. Learning Lab is made possible by Friends of the Chandler Public Library and the City of Chandler.

Volunteer Opportunities
  • Qualifications:  Tutors must be 18 years of age or older, speak English well, read and write English at a 12th grade level, and have a high school diploma or GED. Desirable qualities include patience, flexibility, cultural sensitivity, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.
  • Responsibilities:  Tutors must attend 20 hours of pre-service training (including 6 hours of on-line courses), submit required status reports, maintain appropriate behavior with their learner, and meet the time commitment of two hours per week for a minimum of nine months.
  • Support Provided:  Professional development and support for tutors is available through on-going tutor communication, in-service workshops, and individual consultation with staff. All instructional materials are provided free of charge.

Volunteers needed to help adults improve their reading and writing!

Become a Tutor and work one-on-one or lead a small group of adult learners who read or write below the third grade level or who speak very little English.
